First Lieutenant Bloom was a member of the Marine Attack Squadron 224, Marine Attack Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 20, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) flying over Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
