Staff Sergeant Bivens was a member of the Security Platoon, 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade. On April 15, 1970, he was a pathfinder flying in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) to insert South Vietnamese troops into Dak Seang Special Forces Camp about 20 miles north of Dak To, South Vietnam. The area was attacked by the enemy, and Staff Sergeant Bivens was listed as Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
