First Lieutenant Bird was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 362, Marine Attack Group 36, 1st Marine Air Wing. On July 13, 1968, he was crew member of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) over Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
