Navy Hospital Corpsman Bergman was attached to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was shot in the back by the enemy near Chonwonsan-Dong, Korea while tending his wounded comrades and died of those wounds on June 22, 1952.
