Staff Sergeant Benton was a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On May 23, 1969, he was part of a security force evacuating casualties at Quang Tri, South Vietnam when his helicopter landing zone was overrun. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
