Colonel Barras was a member of the 56th Special Operations Wing. On December 18, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) on a mission about 20 miles west of the Mu Gia Pass, Laos when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on June 8, 1991 and identified on November 18, 1998. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
