Commander Barnett was a member of Attack Squadron 93, Carrier Air Wing 5, U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS MIDWAY (CVA-41). On May 23, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Attack Aircraft Corsair II (A-7B) on a strike mission into Nam Dinh, North Vietnam, when he was declared missing. His remains were recovered on November 3, 1988 and identified on February 17, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
