Lieutenant Barber was a member of Attack Squadron 75, Carrier Air Wing 7, U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA-62). On September 18, 1965, he was a crew member of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over North Vietnam when the aircraft crashed killing him. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
