First Lieutenant Bancroft was a member of the 14th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Udorn Air Base, Thailand. On November 13, 1970, he was the navigator of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) on an aerial reconnaissance mission east of Tan Ap in Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam. As the aircraft made a low pass on a target, it exploded and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
