Staff Sergeant Ayers was a member of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. On March 19, 1970, he was Killed in Action by small arms fire while fighting in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
