Lieutenant Commander Ashall, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of the Attack Squadron 85, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CVA-66). On August 28, 1968 he was the bombardier/navigator of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6B) on an armed reconnaissance mission in the Vinh Son area of North Vietnam, when the aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
