Private First Class Gustafson was a member of Battery B, 57th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division was attached to the 31st Regimental Combat Team. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy at the Chosin Reservoir near Hagaru, North Korea on December 2, 1950 and died while a prisoner on December 31, 1951. His remains were recovered on November 30, 1993 and identified on June 3, 2011. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
