Commander Wilkins was a member of Attack Squadron 153, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On July 11, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on a night mission of dropping flares along a road to locate targets of opportunity in the vicinity of Vinh, Nghe An Province, North Vietnam. After dropping the flares his aircraft crashed about 12 miles north of Vinh. His remains were recovered on June 21, 1989 and identified on October 10, 1996. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
