Private First Class Van Campen was a member of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. On June 24, 1965, he was on a combat operation near Bien Hoa, South Vietnam, when he was sounded and became separated from his unit. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
