First Lieutenant Thatcher was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang fighter with the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. On June 6, 1951, while on a combat mission, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed 45 miles southeast of Wonsan, Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
