For his leadership and valor, Ensign Sullivan was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Ensign Sullivan was the pilot of a F9F-2B Panther Jet fighter with Fighter Squadron 191 aboard the carrier USS PRINCETON (CV-37). On May 6, 1951, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire near Koto-ri, Korea and exploded in midair near Hongmun-ni. He was listed as Missing in Action and presumed dead on May 19, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
