Ensign Steves was a pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter based on the aircraft carrier USS LEYTE (CV-32) and had flown over fifty missions over Korea. On December 20, 1952, he departed the USS LEYTE off Norfolk, Virginia headed for Sanford, Florida. His aircraft crashed enroute.
