Captain Severson was the pilot of a C-47A Skytrain transport with the 5010th Air Base Group stationed at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. On September 7, 1951, His aircraft was practicing ground control approach touch and go landings, when it crashed about 5 miles southwest of Eielson AFB, killing three of the four servicemen on board.
