For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Salazar was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

First Lieutenant Salazar was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang fighter with the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. On December 31, 1952, while marking a target for a strike, his aircraft was hit by ground fire. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on January 1, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
