For his leadership and valor, Major Powell was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the European Theater of Operations Medal.
Notes
Major Powell was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the executive officer of the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while delaying the superior Chinese forces along the eastern shore of the Chosin Reservoir area, North Korea on December 2, 1950 and presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
