Private First Class Martinez-Mercado was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. On November 11, 1967, he was on a search and destroy mission in Kontum Province, South Vietnam when his unit engaged an enemy force. He was killed in the action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
