Ensign Irwin was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Ensign Irwin was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a crew member of the destroyer "USS RICH" (DD-820). While on service in the Mediterranean Sea, He was stricken ill and was evacuated to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Virginia where he died on July 13, 1952.
