Captain Hellbach was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 232, Marine Attack Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On May 19, 1967, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Fighter (F-8E) on a combat mission near Vinh Linh, Quang Binh Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on September 29, 1997 and identified on May 11, 1998. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
