On March 4, 1953, while on a combat mission northwest of Wonsan, North Korea, his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and set on fire. He tried to land on an air strip but lost control and crashed into the sea at high speed two miles southwest of Yo-do, North Korea. His remains were not recovered.
