Captain Cordova was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 232, Marine Attack Group 15, 1st Marine Air Wing. On August 26, 1972, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4J) on a combat mission near Sop Hoa, Houa Phan Province, Laos, when he was shot down by a MiG-21. He parachuted safely but was surrounded on the ground by the enemy and was declared missing. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on March 13, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
